So, things went pretty well at the pediatric gastroenterologist yesterday. Abby was seen by a resident and Dr. Gold, and both said that she seems to be doing very well. There were several routes that we could have taken, but since Abby seems to be doing so well (she couldn't stop smiling at the doctors while they examined her yesterday, the little flirt), they suggested that we stay our current course with one minor change. The rice cereal that we are currently adding to Abby's formula (to thicken the formula and help with her reflux) actually contains soy. (I had no idea...) So, Dr. Gold suggested that we switch brands to a soy-free rice cereal. Apparently, some babies with milk protein allergies also exhibit signs of intolerance to soy. So, the doctor wants us to switch cereal brands, stay with our current formula, and then take some more poo samples in 10-14 days.
If these samples still come back positive, Dr. Gold would like to perform the infant equivalent of a colonoscopy. He said that it is much less invasive than the procedure when it is performed on adults. The scope goes in about 6 inches, so there is little to no discomfort for the baby, and no sedation or medication is necessary. It really doesn't feel any different than taking the baby's temperature rectally and is done very quickly. In fact, Dr. Gold said that most babies sleep right through the procedure.
I'm hoping that it won't come to that point. The most recent poo sample did come back positive for occult blood, but it was much less than our earlier samples. In all other areas, she is doing great, so I'm hopeful that Abby's insides are healing and that she will continue to thrive!!
