Recent Life in Pictures

Rather than a lengthy, wordy post today, I thought I'd share a few photos from the past few weeks to let you know what's been going on around the Ng house.

A fun shopping cart at Wegmans, of course!

This one's for you, Aunt Katie and Uncle John! Yum!
We were so lucky to spend some time over Thanksgiving with
our new baby cousin, Carter. This picture doesn't even begin
to do justice to his cuteness. Such a sweet boy! :-)

excited for their baby sister to arrive.
(P.S. - Can you see my feet? Me neither...)

Sandy

Nothing could have prepared us for this.

Two weeks ago, "Superstorm" Sandy crashed down on the northeast, hitting the tri-state area (New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut) especially hard. We dealt with a hurricane last year (Irene in August), and while it wasn't fun, it was nothing like this. Our power was out for just over a day, and it caused some downed tree limbs in our neighborhood. But, Sandy wasn't an ordinary hurricane. Unlike Irene, she didn't make landfall before hitting our area, so she was strong. But she was also mixed with a winter storm, the jet stream and high tide. Superstorm, indeed.

While we had our evacuation bags packed, we hunkered down and rode out the storm at home. (Our house is not in a flood zone, so our town did not issue an evacuation order.) Sunday began with some wind and rain. Monday really brought the power of the storm. Our power went out around 4:30 pm on Monday afternoon. All of us slept downstairs as we heard the wind whistling and the crash of trees and limbs. By around 1:00 am on Monday, the worst of the storm had passed through, so Tuesday morning found many folks in our neighborhood out and about, checking on neighbors and surveying Sandy's aftermath.
The end of our block. (There is a car under the downed limbs on the right.)

Our babysitter's car was crushed under this tree...

Our brother-in-law and sister-in-law's house,
which also experienced damage to the roof and chimney on the back side of the house.

Do you see the person on the right side of this photo, in the navy coat?
Look how small she is compared to the uprooted tree roots...

Another downed tree at the end of our block.

This tree went through the home's front entryway.
(Thankfully, everyone inside was okay.)

Another downed tree that took out the power lines.

An uprooted tree around the corner from our house.

All this devastation in the neighborhood, and this was our front lawn.

That's right - one tree limb, which bent our gutter, but caused no real damage to our home, cars, or property. I remember standing in our front lawn, unable to process how incredibly fortunate we were. Giant trees had been uprooted all around our neighborhood, and yet, this was it at our house. Our property was fine, but more importantly, we were fine. My family was safe, thank God. Walking around the neighborhood, I saw neighbors checking on neighbors and heard the good news that our neighbors were fine, too.

I know that our area was extremely lucky - our neighborhood had no flooding and power was restored to houses fairly quickly. (Our power was back on Friday, four days after it went out, with power restored to most other parts of our neighborhood within 7-8 days after the storm.) Since we were without power, on Wednesday morning, I took the kids and drove up to my mom's house. (Proof that you are never too old to need your mother. She allowed the kids and I to invade her house on less than a day's notice for what would be an indeterminate amount of time. After being frightened by the storm, Abby and Zach loved our "vacation" to Grandma's house!)

On our way upstate, I passed no fewer than a dozen convoys of utility trucks headed towards the tri-state area. Each time I'd see one, I would point it out to Abby and tell her how fortunate we were to have people who were willing to help us. (On our way back to Long Island, we passed several convoys returning upstate, including a group of three trucks flying the Canadian flag.)

The kids and I drove back yesterday, after almost two weeks upstate. Long Island (and the other parts of the tri-state area recovering from the storm) is still feeling Sandy's after-effects. Cut up trees and limbs sit by the side of the road, or in some cases, in the road. Utility crews still work hard to restore power and other services to homes. Gas lines are still long (though not as bad as they were immediately after the storm).

And yet, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude as I pulled into our driveway yesterday. I saw the lights on in our home and neighborhood. I saw our mums returned to our front steps. I saw Abby run into the waiting arms of her papa, whom we'd all missed so much. (Carey was expected at work whenever power was restored to his office, so he did not come upstate with us.) I returned to my home, a privilege that many people will not be afforded after this storm. We're doing what we can, donating clothing, food, and our time to help those who were not so fortunate. If you're able, won't you consider doing the same? ABC news has a list of organizations who are accepting donations to help those hit hardest by the storm. (This includes donating blood to assist with the blood shortages that resulted from so many blood drives being cancelled.) Did you know you can text the word "Redcross" to 90999 to make a $10 donation? So please, help out in whatever way you can, whether by a monetary donation, a donation of food or supplies, or by raising up those affected in your prayers.

Random Ng-ness

I know what you're thinking. "Wow, Kristen, we haven't had a new post on the blog in a bit. Things must be busy, huh?" Which is your nice way of saying "Get your butt in front of your computer and write something, puh-lease." Not in a mean way, but in a "the last time you were off the blog for this long, your kid was in the hospital for a week and we're concerned" way.

I wish I had something really fabulous to share, like "We just came back from the most awesome vacation ever!" or "We won the lottery and have been enjoying our time together now that Carey will never have to work again." Alas and alack, not so much. There's just been a lot of "Ng Things" going on around here lately. What kinds of things you might ask? Let's see:

  • My dad was down for a week remodeling my parents-in-law's kitchen. I played the part of paint maven, which turned out to be a much longer process than I would have liked. But, the project is done now and looks amazing: new cabinets, new counter top, new microwave, and more storage space than Mama and Dad will be able to shack a stick at. And, it was so much fun to spend time with my dad. We even joked about starting a reality show about a father-daughter remodeling team. :-)
  • Abby and Zach are both in summer reading clubs at our library, so we've been spending lots of time reading and going to the library to turn in our time clocks for cool prizes and more books. (On a side note: Abby never ceases to amaze me. My little bookworm can hear a book twice and recite it from memory. Sound familiar, Aunt Katie?)
  • I've been doing some part-time work on the side. I don't want to go into too much detail until I'm sure that things will work out, but its been great to put some of my workforce skills back to work, and doing it from home no less.
  • We've just had a lot of cleaning/organizing to do around the house. To be frank, Carey and I are currently trying to decide if the Ngs will remain a family of four, or if God has plans for a "Party of 5" around here. So, we've got a lot of baby stuff (clothing, accessories, toys, etc.) hanging around in limbo: we don't want to sell it if we might need it, but we don't want to keep it forever either... So how do you store items when you don't know if you'll want to sell it or if you might need it for another little baby butt?
  • And when we haven't been doing all of the above, we've been enjoying the summer. Walks, Italian ices, trips to the playground, playing in the kiddie pool in the backyard.  Just enjoying summer.

So, yes, we're still here, and we're fine. Better than fine, actually. We have these two faces to fill our days.

Someone took my baby and replaced him with this pastina-faced little boy...

So, yeah, we're good.

Beauty and the Beast

Can I just begin this post by saying how much I enjoy the public library? Not only do Carey and I make constant use of the inter-library loan system, but the children's section at our library is super, with awesome, helpful children's librarians, and they post such great information. Carey and I have both found out about some great local events thanks to flyers from the library.

During a recent trip to the library, Carey found a flyer for Children's BayWay, the children's theatre portion of the BroadHollow Theatre Company here on Long Island. They put on musicals for kids, and all seats are only $10! So that would be great in itself, right? It gets better. Their current production is Beauty and the Beast, one of Abby's favorite movies! Carey surprised Abby with tickets, and the two of them caught the show on Saturday afternoon.

Carey and Mini Carey Abby, ready for the show!

While Abby was super excited to go, she did have a bit of a rough time once the show got started. I think the lights, loud sounds, and the fact that they were close to the stage freaked her our a bit. Carey took her out to the vestibule and the two of them enjoyed the first act from the back of the theatre. He was able to bribe convince Abby to watch the second act from their seats, and she seemed to really like it.

However, the highlight of the show came afterwards, when Abby was actually able to meet Belle! Belle is definitely Abby's favorite princess, due in no small part to the fact that her dress is one of Abby's favorite colors - yellow.

The highlight of Abby's afternoon - meeting Belle!

So, while it was a bit rough in the beginning, Abby had a great time and told Zachary and me all about it when she got home. We are once again grateful for a public library that offers such great information and services. But even more so, I am thankful to be married to such a wonderful man, who knew how happy our little girl would be seeing her favorite princess and making it such a special Daddy-Daughter Day!

Naked Walls

Continuing with this week's (unofficial) theme of updates at Casa Ng, I wanted to share a photo project that I created and that is now proudly adorning what used to be a naked space of wall in our downstairs family room.

One of the blogs that I follow is The Mom Creative, written by Jessica Turner. Jessica is a wife, mom, and crafty lady, so I love reading her blog daily. Jessica manages to find great deals on photo books, prints, gifts, etc. and posts them for her readers to take advantage of, too. Back in May, Jessica blogged about a new online photo book and gift site. As part of their grand opening, Paper Coterie was offering a $40 credit toward their products, not including shipping. After looking through their website, I decided to create three repositionable posters - one for Abby's birth day, one for her first birthday, and one for her second birthday.

As you can imagine, traffic to the site was pretty high, considering what a great deal this was, so it took about 2.5 weeks for me to receive my finished products. But I absolutely love how they turned out! The posters are made of repositionable fabric that adheres directly to the wall - no nail holes, no picture frames required. The quality is beautiful, and the customer service was amazing. (Paper Coterie actually reached out to me because I'd started a project but hadn't finished it before the discount code expired. They gave me a special code (for the same amount) and gave me an additional week to complete my order!)

So, the big wall in our family room is no longer "naked." We now have beautiful pictures of our beautiful little girl, and I can't wait to make posters for Zachary's arrival and Abby's 3rd birthday!

My beautiful little girl!

Since the individual posters can be hard to see in the photo above, please see below for close-ups of each individual poster.

Seriously, how cute are they?! Well, I think that anything with my little girl on it is pretty darn adorable, but I love how Paper Coterie sets up their projects to assist the, ahem, creatively challenged like myself. I would have never thought to put together posters like these, but I love them!

Cradle of Aviation Museum

You may remember this post from last summer, where I described Abby's first visit to the Cradle of Aviation Museum. We borrowed the museum pass from our local library again two weeks ago (Saturday, May 7th) and made the trip back to the museum.

Once again, Abby loved pressing buttons and trying out the kid-friendly experiments on wind and aerodynamics. (Mostly, she just liked pressing the buttons.) There is also a special play area for kids called the Junior Jet Club - Abby loved playing with the blocks, riding the airplane and climbing into and around everything. We had a really fun morning at the museum, followed by a few rides on Nunley's Carousel. Abby loves riding on the white horses!

We had a fun family day. It truly is such a blessing to spend time with my wonderful husband and our precious daughter!

Abby and Daddy outside the museum.
(We had to recreate the photo from last year!)

Pressing the big red button made a hot air balloon rise into the air. This is, by far, Abby's favorite thing to do at the museum!

Watching the hot air balloon with mommy.

In the cockpit. (And yes, my child has a monkey tattoo. Abby was a good helper at daycare the day before, so they gave her a temporary tattoo. We let Abby keep them on until her next bath, which was Saturday night in this case. So, Abby got to walk around tattooed at the museum...)

Riding in the space ship. Unfortunately, she got pretty bored about 10 seconds into the 45 second ride...

Waiting patiently, and intently, for a private birthday party to end so we could ride the carousel.

I love how the rest of the photo is kind of blurry, but the smile on Abby's face is crystal clear. :-)

Josh!

Okay, in case you didn't know, I am a HUGE Josh Groban fan. Like, member of his fan club fan. And going to see him in concert multiple times per tour fan. And trading emails constantly with my sister-in-law Anne whenever we hear interesting Josh news. Yeah, a fan like that.

So imagine my shock when a friend of mine, Tim, called me at work last week to ask if I wanted to see Josh Groban on the Regis and Kelly show on Tuesday. Um, of course! After arranging to take the morning off work, I found my fan club t-shirt (which just barely managed to cover the belly) and prepared for some Josh-ness.

I met up with Tim's mom at the studios and, after waiting on line outside and then again inside, we were let into the studio. I was shocked at how small it was - they must use some tricky camera angles to make it look bigger than it is. We were about four rows back, off to the left, but with an awesome view of where Josh would be singing.

And, oh, it was awesome. Josh sang "If I Walk Away" from his new album, Illuminations. He really does have an amazing voice. While I wasn't a huge fan of Illuminations the first time I listened to it - it is a departure from his previous albums - it has really started to grow on me, and I was actually hoping that he would sing this song. Beautiful.

Sound check...

Ready to begin...

Stop blowing kisses at me, Josh. I'm a married woman...

Uh-mazing...

Beautiful ending...

Chatting with Regis and Kelly...

We even got a bonus song!
(They taped him singing again, to be played on a future episode.)

Here is Josh's performance from the show:

It was so amazing to see Josh sing again, especially sitting so close to him. He has such a amazing voice, and he was laughing and joking with his fans whenever the camera wasn't on. Thanks so much to Tim's mom, Suzanne, for inviting me to share this awesome experience!

Carey's Good Deed = Our Good Time

My Carey is wonderful. Really, he is. Not only is he a wonderful husband, father, and friend, he is amazingly generous to people he doesn't even know. You see, my hubby has a blood type (B negative, Rh negative) that is rare. So, ever since he started donating blood, as soon as he is able to donate again, our local Red Cross calls him and asks him to schedule another donation appointment. Because his blood type is rare. And because his blood can be given to premature babies. And because his platelets can be given to cancer patients. So what does my Carey do? He donates. Time and again. Because he is selfless and wonderful like that. (Side note: Carey has also registered with the National Marrow Donor Program. Someday, my husband may donate bone marrow to save the life of a total stranger. My eyes are tearing up just to think about it. I love him. I love his generosity. And I love how he never gives it a second thought. When asked to register, he asked how to do it. That was it. No thinking it over. No worrying about it. No second thoughts.)

When Carey was asked to donate platelets at the beginning of the summer, he made an appointment to donate. As it happens, for every platelet donation made during the summer months, the donor was given a set of tickets to Citi Field, the new home of the Mets. Carey himself is a Yankee fan, but knowing that I'm a big Mets fan, he asked me to go with him to the game. Yay! Carey's good deed meant that we could have a great evening together at the ballpark!

Citi Field!

On our way home, Carey took a picture of me beneath the Citi Field sign while sporting my Carlos Beltran Mets jersey

Sad faces - Final score: Mets 4, Marlins 11

Special thanks to Bart and Melissa, who watched Abby so Carey and I could enjoy the game together. Hopefully, the end result will be better the next time we make it to a Mets game! (Although, even if it's not, I grew up as a Bills fan, so I'm used to disappointment and have learned to be very, very, VERY patient with my team!)
