Seven Days of Thanks: Day 4 - Being a SAHM (Stay-at-Home Mom)

After Abigail was born, I was so sad to return to work. So as we prepared for Zachary's arrival, I was beyond excited that Carey had worked out our finances so I could stay home with our children. Little did I know how challenging it would be...

I believe that we are exactly where God wants us to be. At first, it was a little hard for me to swallow that God wanted my days to be filled with diaper changes, endless piles of laundry, and the Sisyphean task of cleaning our home. But once I got my footing, I no longer stared at the clock, counting down the minutes until Carey got home and could take one of the kids off my hands. I found myself enjoying trips to the public library, where we are such frequent visitors that all the librarians know us by name. I found myself looking forward to music classes, playgroup, swim lessons - all those fun activities where my kids could socialize and play with other children their age. I even found mundane errands, like grocery shopping, a fun learning adventure.

So yes, my days are still filled with diapers, laundry, and messiness (and will be for some time!). But they are also filled with good morning cuddles, silly games of Simon Says at the bus stop, and crazy Hot Dog Dances at the end of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. God did know exactly where I should be, and I am grateful for the opportunity to spend each of my days with these amazing little ones.

My Little Ones

There are two little people in this house who bring me such joy. Yes, they are challenging sometimes. Yes, they are so full of energy that most nights I fall into bed, asleep before my head hits the pillow. But they are also full of smiles, excellent cuddlers, and such fun to be around that I count myself blessed every day, even the difficult days.

The End of January? Seriously?!

How can it be that the first month of 2013 is done already? Seriously?!

It's hard to grasp that Carey's birthday, our first family celebration of the year, happened last week.

It's hard to believe that it took us four weeks into the new year to get our Christmas cards in the mail.

It's hard to imagine that our calendar could be any fuller, and yet, doctor's appointments, dentist appointments, library programs, swim lessons - it all keeps adding up.

And yet, this is what my days are all about.

Parenting with the Windows Open

Summer has finally cooled down enough that instead of hibernating inside with the air conditioning, we are actually able to enjoy time outside and open the windows to allow breezes into our home. I love it.

Funny enough, earlier this week, our open windows presented me with a parenting moment, and it wasn't necessarily a good one.

Abby was sitting at the table eating her lunch. As a special treat, I had bought her a single-serving bowl of Beefaroni. (Yes, yes, canned beef product and noodles - not my finest mommy moment, but she loves them and we only do it every once in a while...) I was putting my own lunch dishes in the sink when I heard a bump from the other room, followed by a "Sorry, mommy..." I turn around to find half a bowl of Beefaroni on the floor and Abby with her spoon in mid-air. I lost it. In my best "repressing my anger" voice, I asked Abby why her lunch was on the floor. She admitted that she wasn't holding onto the bowl. When I asked her why, she replied "because I wasn't." (Hello phrase that triggers my anger...) I sent her to the bathroom to clean herself up while I began cleaning up the floor. After cleaning the floor and letting Zach out of his booster chair, I went into the bathroom to find that, instead of cleaning her hands and face like I had asked, Abby was sitting on the edge of the bathtub, pouting because I hadn't let her put her dirty spoon in the sink. (And cue second loss of temper in the last five minutes...) After getting Abby cleaned up and in bed for an early, extended quiet rest time, I realized that I could hear my neighbors, who were speaking at normal volumes in their backyard, clearly through my open windows. This also meant that they most likely heard my half-hearted attempts at keeping my voice calm and steady (a.k.a. angry voice and frustrated words).

The next day, we were in the grocery store and Zach was itching to get out of the cart, which meant I was pushing snacks, his sippy cup, and a bunch of toys at him in an attempt to keep him calm long enough to finish my shopping. As we were going down a fairly crowded aisle, Zach dropped a toy on the ground and Abby said, "Oh Zachy, you're being such a pain in the butt!" {Insert mortified mom here.} Yes, I sometimes jokingly tell the kids that they're being a pain in mommy's butt, followed by playful nibbles, tickles and hugs. So imagine my shock when a comment I had made as a joke was taken out of context by my almost-4 year old. In a crowded grocery store.

So what's the point of all this? Not more mommy guilt, I hope? After thinking about it, I realized that the point is that I sometimes parent like no one is listening. I say things, even in a joking manner, that I probably wouldn't say if someone else was around. But now I have a preschooler who repeats everything that I say, even if I wish she wouldn't. I have open windows and anyone in the neighborhood could hear my words. But, most importantly, God is always listening. He hears the words that I speak to my children, my two precious blessings from Him. I imagine there are times when he shakes his head at a random comment or tone of voice that I use with His blessings. I imagine there are times when he would like to remind me of the way that my parents spoke to me, with kindness and love, but firmly when necessary. I imagine there are times when he'd like to use a mute button on me before I say something that I will regret later.

So, the past few days, I've been trying much harder to watch my words, because I know people are listening. I know that my words and my tone of voice are making an impression on Abigail (and Zach). I know that whatever I say could be repeated, in or out of context, at any time. So, I am trying to say things that I would only say in front of anyone. I am trying to use a tone of voice that I would use in front of anyone. This doesn't mean that I'm not disciplining and directing my children. I still have to teach Zach to not hit and stay away from "yucky" things in our house (like garbage cans). I still have to help refine Abigail's manners and stop pouting fits. But I realize that I want to do this, in private, in the same manner that I would in public. I want to be consistent. I want to be kind and loving. I want God to know that I will strive every day to be a better mother to these two amazing children that He has given me. So from now on, I'm parenting with my windows open.

What We Do All Day...

Now that we're a one-income family, I'm always looking for fun things to do with the kids on the cheap. And by cheap I mean as close to free as humanly possible.

So what have we been doing this summer? Hmmm, let's see...

On Monday, August 6th, we attended "Monday Minnows" at the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum. For a small fee ($6), we were able to participate in some ocean-inspired free play, listen to a story, play with bubbles (that session's theme) and make a bubble-maker. While Zach was a bit too young to participate this year, he's a people watcher, so he loved watching all the bigger kids playing and blowing bubbles.
Bubbles!!

I promise you: Zach was way more excited than he looks in this photo.
{On a side note: notice the shirt? "Whale Xing", at the Whaling Museum. Nerdy mom fun!}

Abby decorating her bubble maker (a.k.a. - the top of a soda bottle).

Don't know if you can see it, but it actually works. The proof is in the bubble!

On Tuesday, August 14th, we went to our local library for "Hey Diddle Diddle," a program of songs and rhymes for babies. Zach loved it, and Abby loved watching after her baby brother.

Hey, it was my birthday, so you bet that I'm gonna put both kiddos in their Mets gear. :-)

Later that day, we went to Northport Family Night. The village of Northport closes Main Street to vehicle traffic, and people can wander along the street, checking out businesses, vendors, and grabbing a bite to eat. Carey even came home from work early (since it was my birthday) so the four of us were able to go together.

That cotton candy is bigger than her head...

Beautiful painted face!

Last night, we headed over to Planting Fields Arboretum for an outdoor production of Cinderella. While Abby is normally more of a "Belle" girl, she was pretty darn happy to don her Cinderella outfit and enjoy a princess night!

My Cinderella, waiting for the show to begin.

Zach didn't have any idea what was going on onstage, but he loved "people watching"!

This smile was worth waiting in the very long line to meet Cinderella and her prince. :-)

So, this is what we do. We spend time together. We search out inexpensive ways to have fun. And we make memories. Priceless.

Hey, Mommy!

Is it bath time???

Do I get to play in that water???

With sissy?!?

Hooray!!!

Ever since Zach began taking baths in the big tub with Abby, this kid comes running, er, crawling really fast, whenever he hears the sound of the water running. Unfortunately for Abby, this has meant no more tub crayons (see her artwork on the tub wall?) and no bubbles, since Zach tends to eat both. But, she doesn't seem to mind and has a blast splashing around with Zach. (In fact, I think she splashes around a lot more now because she can blame it on her little brother!)

Love these two smiley kiddos!

Helpers

When doing laundry, this busy mama appreciates help where ever she can get it. Especially if it comes in two such cute little packages...

Abby loves to help me fold Zach's laundry...

And, well, Zach helps by taking the laundry out of the basket.
Unfortunately, I then have to pick it up off the floor...

Loving the Library - Part 1

Hello, my name is Kristen, and I am addicted to the library.

It's the truth, friends. My kiddos and I spend as much time as possible at the library, and when we're not at the library, we're reading books from the library or making crafts that we got at the library. Carey and I always joke that we use every dollar of the library taxes that we pay every year, whether it's activities/programs for the kids or books/movies/music that we borrow for ourselves.

The library hosts lots of fun activities throughout the year, but they really pack their schedule over the summer, knowing that kids are home from school. Thankfully, most of the summer programs offered for kids of Abby's and Zach's ages welcome siblings, so I'm able to take both kids to lots of events.  Here are just a few of the great programs that we've attended this summer:

JumpBunch
Funny enough, Abby actually participated in a 10-week JumpBunch program at daycare last year. Coach Robin recognized Abby (who could forget a face that cute?!), and Abby had a blast playing the different sports.
Stretch!

Family Jamboree
Very similar to the Tot Music classes that both Abby and Zach attend, this program was led by two wonderful young ladies who sang songs, passed around musical instruments, and - perhaps most importantly - had bubbles and hand stamps!

Zach looking at the bubbles.

Abby modeling her music note hand stamp.

Family Fun Time
Open-ended play was a huge hit, especially with Abby, who tried out everything in the room. This was also a great opportunity to work on sharing and waiting patiently for our turn.

Tools!!

Robot Dreams
Stories about robots and making a robot craft? Abby was excited for days!

Aside from using glue, Abby's favorite part had to be using safety scissors.

Abby's finished robot. She couldn't wait to show daddy!

We've also been to countless story times and both kids have been participating in their age-appropriate book clubs. Abby has been devouring books this summer, with the two of us reading at least 45 minutes a day. I am so, SO happy that she is growing up with a love for books and reading. (My big sister was a bookworm when she was growing up, and I think she turned out pretty darn smart. So maybe someone is following in Aunt Katie's footsteps?) And I love that the library really does so much to encourage kids to read and learn, especially during the summer.

Tomorrow, I'll be sharing about one of our "unofficial" library projects: reading an entire book list of princess books. I'll also be sharing a few books off that list that, as a parent, I loved for the great messages that they shared.

Random Ng-ness

I know what you're thinking. "Wow, Kristen, we haven't had a new post on the blog in a bit. Things must be busy, huh?" Which is your nice way of saying "Get your butt in front of your computer and write something, puh-lease." Not in a mean way, but in a "the last time you were off the blog for this long, your kid was in the hospital for a week and we're concerned" way.

I wish I had something really fabulous to share, like "We just came back from the most awesome vacation ever!" or "We won the lottery and have been enjoying our time together now that Carey will never have to work again." Alas and alack, not so much. There's just been a lot of "Ng Things" going on around here lately. What kinds of things you might ask? Let's see:

  • My dad was down for a week remodeling my parents-in-law's kitchen. I played the part of paint maven, which turned out to be a much longer process than I would have liked. But, the project is done now and looks amazing: new cabinets, new counter top, new microwave, and more storage space than Mama and Dad will be able to shack a stick at. And, it was so much fun to spend time with my dad. We even joked about starting a reality show about a father-daughter remodeling team. :-)
  • Abby and Zach are both in summer reading clubs at our library, so we've been spending lots of time reading and going to the library to turn in our time clocks for cool prizes and more books. (On a side note: Abby never ceases to amaze me. My little bookworm can hear a book twice and recite it from memory. Sound familiar, Aunt Katie?)
  • I've been doing some part-time work on the side. I don't want to go into too much detail until I'm sure that things will work out, but its been great to put some of my workforce skills back to work, and doing it from home no less.
  • We've just had a lot of cleaning/organizing to do around the house. To be frank, Carey and I are currently trying to decide if the Ngs will remain a family of four, or if God has plans for a "Party of 5" around here. So, we've got a lot of baby stuff (clothing, accessories, toys, etc.) hanging around in limbo: we don't want to sell it if we might need it, but we don't want to keep it forever either... So how do you store items when you don't know if you'll want to sell it or if you might need it for another little baby butt?
  • And when we haven't been doing all of the above, we've been enjoying the summer. Walks, Italian ices, trips to the playground, playing in the kiddie pool in the backyard.  Just enjoying summer.

So, yes, we're still here, and we're fine. Better than fine, actually. We have these two faces to fill our days.

Someone took my baby and replaced him with this pastina-faced little boy...

So, yeah, we're good.

Some Days...

Some days it's hard...
Tears in eyes + drool = teething. Ugh.
(May 2012)

Some days it's easy...
Two smiling swinging kiddos!
(June 2012)

Some days I feel like I'm falling apart...
Oh goodness, that face!
(Disclaimer: this was Zach's first-ever taste of an Italian ice. I gave him a minuscule taste, but it was apparently enough to let him know that he didn't like it...)
(June 2012)

Some days I feel like I've got it all together...
My 3.5 year old wrote her name. All by herself. And, cue the proud mommy moment...
(June 2012)

Some days, this mommy thing is overwhelming. When Abby is "being 3" and Zach is refusing to nap and we're running out of bibs because I forgot to do the kids' laundry and I have to clean a poop cloth diaper and Abby asks me to read a book at the same time that Zach is crying to be held and I have absolutely no idea what to cook for dinner... Yeah, it can be rough.

But, on some days, I watch Abby playing with Zach and the two of them laughing together. I manage to read a book while feeding Zach and sing Abby's favorite song while changing Zach's diaper. I get us out of the house for a walk, a trip to the playground, or even just errands, and we're clean, dressed, and fed. I have a home-cooked meal waiting for Carey when he gets home. I am able to read a good-night story with Abby and give Zach a goodnight kiss after daddy gives him his last bottle.

Yes, there are some days when I fall into bed, thankful for my family, but praying for strength and patience, so I can do better the next day. So I can remain calm. So I can keep my temper in check. So I can give all of the hugs and kisses and attention that my children need. And there are some days when I peacefully climb into bed, thankful for my family and thankful that the Lord heard my prayers for wisdom, patience and compassion.

The Great Outdoors

Boy oh boy, do these kiddos of mine love to spend time outdoors! Zach is now tall enough/old enough/steady enough to sit upright in the double stroller, whereas before he was always strapped into his infant carrier. Well, now that he can face forward and see something other than mommy's face, this little boy loves to take walks. Abby has always been a fan of walking around the neighborhood, and she loves to sit in the front seat in the double stroller. (Although, I don't know how much longer that will last. My little girl is very tall, and her feet tend to hit the ground if she's not careful to keep them on the footrest!) We have been out walking every day this week, with the exception of Wednesday since it was threatening to rain all day.

Every Thursday, our church playgroup meets, either at our church's Parish Outreach center or a local park or attraction. Yesterday, the group was meeting at our favorite park, which is only about a five minute walk from our house, if that. So, I loaded both kids into the stroller and walked over to the park. We had a great time playing with the other kids, and Zach enjoyed his first time on some of the playground equipment.
Wheeeeeee!

My little daredevil! She loves to climb everything at the playground,
which sometimes makes me a little nervous...

Running up and down the big hill by the playground.
