So Proud of my Girl!

We like teeth in this house. I remember eagerly awaiting Abby's first teeth. I remember staring disbelievingly into Zach's mouth to find four teeth by the time he was six months old. They are an absolute pain-in-the-butt while they're "sprouting," but baby teeth are just the cutest little things.

Why all the reminiscing about teeth, you ask? Well, yesterday, I took Abby to the dentist. Carey had taken her to her very first dentist appointment earlier this year, only to find two (very early) cavities. (Hanging head in shame at computer. Well, hanging it down as far as I can while still typing...) Who knew that fruit snacks are the harbinger of evil? Seriously. I thought we were doing something good by giving Abby a snack that was made with fruit juice and had vitamins. Turns out, according to Dr. Mike, fruit snacks are one of the worst things you can give to a child because they stick to all the little nooks and crannies in their teeth and can be difficult to brush out. (They don't write that on the box, do they?) Dr. Mike said we're better off giving her chocolate or ice cream, because neither of those things stick to her teeth. Thankfully, because the cavities were found early (so early, in fact, that he referred to them as "soft spots" rather than cavities), Abby had them drilled out with very little fuss. So, after breaking Abby of her fruit snacks habit and barring all sorts of sticky sweets from the house, we were headed back to the dentist, with baby brother in tow. (Someone hold me...)

Thankfully, our visit was great. The rooms are very kid friendly, the hygienist and Dr. Mike were both great, and Abby was thrilled to receive a Princess toothbrush and goody bag for having a great check-up. The visit started out with x-rays. (The hygienist even pointed out Abby's adult teeth. She's guessing that Abby will lose her bottom tooth, just right of center, first because that adult tooth seemed to be coming in the fastest.) After a quick look and a brush with chocolate toothpaste, Abby had some fluoride put on her teeth and Dr. Mike came in to take a look. He said everything looked great and we should keep doing what we're doing. He also gave Zach a toothbrush to make sure the little guy got off to a good start!

I was so proud of Abby. She did wonderfully and was so happy that she had "zero cavities" that she couldn't wait to get home and call daddy. May she always be this excited to go to the dentist!
