Abby's First Day of School - A Catch-Up Post

It's hard to believe that my baby has been in kindergarten for almost two months now. Where did the time go? And when did she get old enough to go to school anyway?!

All I know is that Abigail was so excited in the days leading up to kindergarten. This little girl has such a love for learning. She is always asking questions and wondering how things work or why things do what they do. She learned to read over the summer, so she's always reading books, the magazines she receives in the mail (High Five from Highlights is her very favorite), and even signs that she sees while we're out and about. She loves to do math problems, and will often take the abacus that Carey's parents gave her and work on math problems from the workbooks she got from Grandma Jadwiga. I am so glad that she wants to learn new things.

So here she is - my little girl, waiting for the school bus for the very first time. Abby was excited. Zachy was excited. Mommy was nervous and anxious and excited and proud, all at the same time.

My Kindergartener!
(And no, that's not her lunch! Kindergarten is only half-day in our district.
That's a "getting to know you" activity that we prepared for the first day of school.)

Waiting, waiting, waiting!

After a few tears when Abby left, Zachy stood with me and said,
"Bye bye, sissy! Bye bye, bus!"

How to celebrate the first day of school?
Why, with a Fribble at Friendly's, of course!

Yummy!

Abby even shared with Zach, although it wasn't his first day of school. :-)

I'm happy to say that, two months into the school year, Abby still loves going to school. I'm not a huge fan of portions of the Core Curriculum, especially some of the math curriculum. However, Abby seems to genuinely enjoy school, so Carey and I do whatever we can to be supportive of her excitement and find ways to challenge her when she's home, without being too "drill sergeant" about it. Thankfully, as I said before, Abby is curious and loves to learn, so she doesn't view this as "work." I often wonder how I got lucky enough to have a kid who actually wants me to quiz her on spelling words, give her math problems, and ask her trivia questions while we wait for the bus...
