Happy New Year's Eve!

I have to admit: New Year's Eve has lost something for me now that I'm a parent. Why would I intentionally stay up past midnight? I have three small children at home, two of whom have been sick for the last week and one of whom is teething. If they're asleep at midnight, I intend to be asleep, too!

However, I do love the idea of a fresh start. A time to look back and a time to look forward. I don't really do resolutions, per se, but I definitely go into January with a desire to be better this year. A better wife and mother. A better role model. A kinder person. A better listener. A healthier me.

As 2014 comes to a close, I hope that you can look back fondly on the many memories of the past 12 months. But I also hope that you have wonderful things to look forward to in 2015! May the New Year find you happy, healthy, and blessed!

Throwback Thursday (Way Back Wednesday) - Halloween Edition!

Holy cow! Kristen is posting on the blog today! (I know, I know - it's been way too long. Is having 3 children an excuse?) Things are crazy busy at the Ng house. Some bad (ear infections and croup, anyone?), but most are really good. Like a little girl who is loving 1st grade. Like a little boy who is still obsessed with vehicles. Like a baby girl who is growing so fast that I'm afraid to blink. Life is pretty awesome at the Ng house. :-)

In preparation for tomorrow's Halloween festivities, I thought I'd post some photos from last Halloween. My sweet Cinderella and my mischievous shark - I love them so much! This year will include a third little Ng dressed up, and I can't wait to post some photos this weekend.

Thanks to everyone who has continued to check All Things Ng, even during the periods of silence. I'm hoping that time will begin to present itself again so I can post occasional updates and pictures of my three little loves. In the meantime, Happy Halloween!!

What?!?

What's that, mommy? It's been how long since you posted to the blog?!

Don't you know people want to see this face?

Don't you know people want to see these other adorable faces, too?

Seriously, mommy, get on the ball.

(Gotcha, baby girl. Mommy will do her best to get back on the wagon and post to the blog a bit more regularly. Starting next week. Mommy is tired, baby girl, so off to bed...)

Silent Blog Does Not Equal Silent House

Oh my heavens, our house is crazy! Who knew that having a third child would introduce such chaos into our house?! (Well, I suppose anyone who has had three kids...)

Anyway, I'm writing this post when I really should be getting into bed, so long story short:

The kids are great.
My house is a mess.
I am tired, but not as tired as I thought I'd be at this point.
Did I mention that my house is a mess?

More to come soon, including some monthly updates for sweet Victoria. In the meantime, pictures of the three little people whom I love so much (and who are largely responsible for the mess in my house).

Tummy time!

Victoria is having a very serious dream...

How Abby Taught Me To Feel Pretty

As a mother of a little girl (soon to be two little girls!), I am always concerned about teaching my daughter how to love herself. Growing up, I never felt like the "pretty girl." The smart girl, the tall sister, the loud one - all these things, but never really the pretty girl. (No - this is not a pity party for teenage Kristen. I look back fondly on my teenage years and have lots of great memories from middle school and high school.) It wasn't until I met Carey that I truly felt beautiful. I guess finding an amazing man to love and who loves you back has that effect on a person...

Anyway, it's always on my mind that I want Abby to know that she is beautiful, inside and out, and to feel comfortable with herself. I see the Hand of God in my daughter - her dimples, her beautiful brown eyes, her loving heart, her tenderness toward her siblings. And her long brown hair.

When I was growing up, I did not particularly like my hair. It's straight, brown, and blah. It wouldn't hold color. It wouldn't keep a curl. It just wouldn't do anything. So I tried to get it to do something, anything, else. I permed it. I lightened it in the summer. I dyed it every color of the rainbow, from blonde-ish to light brown to such a dark red that it almost looked purple. After I got married and got a job, I'd pay ridiculous prices for highlights at my favorite salon. One visit, after almost 3 hours in the chair and over $150, I realized that I didn't want to do it anymore. I had subsequent haircuts to facilitate the growing out of my highlights, and I haven't done anything to my hair since. This hair - this straight, muddy brown mess - was all mine. And I would find a way to love it as it was.

It's been almost a year since I cut my hair short and got bangs. I still love my short hair. Funny enough, now that my hair is shorter, I can see that it has natural highlights. The stuff on my head that I always thought was muddy brown is actually many different shades of brown, from very light to very dark. Because I don't chemically treat it, it shines and is thick and strong. At my most recent haircut, my stylist told me that people come into the salon asking for the kind of color that I have naturally. I responded to her comment by saying that I used to hate my hair, but after Abby was born and grew such beautiful brown hair, I came to love mine, too. As the words left my mouth, I realized how true they were.

As a mother, I only see beauty when I look at Abigail. I love her hair. I love to brush it. I love to style it for special occasions. I love when it tickles me as we cuddle. I love my little girl's straight brown hair. (And let's face it: between my straight Kowalczyk hair and Carey's straight Chinese hair, did we really expect a curly-headed baby? No, we did not...) Each day, I tell Abby how beautiful her hair is. And her response: "I love that I have brown hair, just like you, mommy."

So, each day, I remind myself that I have a little person who is watching how I behave and listening to how I talk about myself. And as I tell my brown-haired, brown-eyed little girl how beautiful she is and how perfectly made by God she is, I find myself realizing that I, too, am perfectly made. And more than just saying the words, as I look at my precious Abigail, I know that I believe those words.

A Little Abby Update

We are preparing to welcome another little girl into our family. But I thought I'd take some time to talk about our big girl. In my opinion, we're well overdue for an Abby update!

What can I say about our sweet girl? Her dimpled smile brightens my day. Her care of her little brother and excitement over the arrival of her baby sister warm my heart. Her love of learning and excitement about school make me proud. God certainly blessed our family when He decided to gift us this wonderful little girl.

Of course, as with any child, life does have its challenges. We often depend on Abby to be more patient and understanding simply because Zachary is still learning these skills. We have been seeing glimpses of attitude, especially when she's tired. She also tends to get frustrated easily, sometimes by small things, like not being able to fit crayons back in the box. So, we are working on these areas, of course. But the blessings of daily life with this precious girl outweigh these challenges by miles and miles.

Who's Sleeping Where?

As we eagerly await the arrival of our Little Lady, we've had to do a little bedroom swapping to make room for everyone. (We have two additional bedrooms downstairs, but we're not comfortable with a five year old being on a completely different floor of our house...) About two weeks ago, we moved Abigail and Zachary into the same room. {Breath held}

Thankfully, it went swimmingly! After a night or two of a bit more chatter than we would have liked, both kiddos are now settling into their new digs. We've adjusted Zachy's bedtime so that he and Abby go down at the same time, and thankfully they usually wake up around the same time anyway. Zach loves his "new cribby," and Abby loves snuggling with Zach in her bed before we say goodnight.

Abby helped me pick out a color for the walls, which I painted back in September. We've re-organized the closet and dresser to make room for Zachy's stuff, as well. I have to say - I really like how it turned out. And I think both of the kids like it, too, which is good, considering they'll be in this arrangement for a few years, at least!

Abby liked the idea of light blue walls, especially after she decided
to choose butterflies and flowers wall decals. We went with
"Blue Sky."

Zachy's decals are "Things That Go." He loves pointing out
the cars, choo-choo, and "air-pane."

A view of Abby's side of the room. Even with blue walls, the pink
makes it obvious that an adorable little girl sleeps here, too!

The shared wall between the door and closet. I love how there's
a bit of Abby and a bit of Zachy mixed together. (I do plan to
redecorate the frames for their caricatures, but I wasn't sure if
I'd have time before the baby arrived, and I wanted to get
everything off the floor!)

But Zachy's old room won't be empty for long. (At least I hope it won't be!) I admit to burnout after painting and re-decorating Abby and Zach's room, so Carey and I decided to decorate Victoria's room in such a way that we could utilize the current color - light green. (Plus, Zach's room was just painted less than 3 years ago...) Thankfully, we still had all of Abigail's nursery decor, which goes very well with light green walls. We sprang for a few new crib sheets and new window treatments, but we were able to re-use a good deal of our baby stuff. So, Victoria's room is all set up and just waiting for a sweet little girl to sleep in it!

All ready for a sweet baby girl!

It became very real that Victoria would be coming home as
soon as we put a sheet on her crib!

Duckies and bears, all in yellow!

A changing table, complete with tiny diapers for a tiny tush!

We're beyond happy with how the move went for Abby and Zach, and we hope that Little Lady will settle into her room once she comes home!

Recent Life in Pictures

Rather than a lengthy, wordy post today, I thought I'd share a few photos from the past few weeks to let you know what's been going on around the Ng house.

Seven Days of Thanks: Day 2 - My Children

When I think about the happiest days of my life, so many of them involve my children. Seeing their precious profiles on the ultrasound screen for the first time. Holding them in my arms after their births. Watching milestones like first smiles, first teeth, first words, and first steps. Just being present for the ordinary, everyday moments that allow them to grow and learn and develop.

There is no way I could ever thank God enough for the challenge and responsibility and blessing of motherhood. Being a mommy is truly the greatest thing I will ever do in my life, and I am so grateful for these two (soon to be 3!) precious babies who bless me each day by calling me "mommy."

The real question isn't whether or not you love your kids, but how well you are able to demonstrate your love and caring so that your children really feel loved.  -Stephanie Marston

Fall Family Fun - A Catch-Up Post

I love autumn. Apples. Pumpkins. Falling leaves. Cool weather that's perfect for playing outside. Fleeces. Halloween and Thanksgiving. It's probably my favorite season of the year. I also love autumn because Carey and I have found some great things to do on Long Island with the kids during this season. So here are a few photos of some of the fun we've had this fall!
