Every weekend, Carey tries to do something special with Abby - just the two of them. I love that they get to spend special daddy/daughter time together, and I know Abby has fun spending time with Carey. Usually, it's as simple as going to the library and playing on the computers, putting together puzzles, and stopping by the library café for a snack. But this weekend, Carey found something super special for the two of them to do.
We don't live too far from Brookhaven National Laboratory. (You can read all about the research they do at Brookhaven
here.) While they do some very high level research there, the lab opens its doors to the public on select Sundays in the summer. Yesterday was
Family Fun Day, and Carey decided to take Abby. While it was very crowded, Carey and Abby had lots of fun. She couldn't wait to tell me about her experiments with magnets, the science show they watched, and the lunch they ate in the cafeteria. (Leave it to Carey's daughter to include food in the day's description!)

Driving the lab's fire truck.
(She even brought home a hat for Zachy!) |
Experimenting with friction and gravity. |
Learning about attraction with magnets. |
Look who built a catenary arch! |
Using shapes to make geometric patterns. |
It's electric! |
Driving the rover on Mars. |
Building with Legos while using oven mitts. |
Abby, Daddy, and some really cool magnets. |
She's even skinnier on Mars! |
Overall, Abby had a great time. We're sure she doesn't understand all the science behind the experiments that she saw and participated in yesterday, but we hope if she views science as something fun now, then she'll become curious about the "whys" and "hows" once she is old enough to understand.
