Loving the Library - Part 2

So yesterday, I confessed my love affair with my local library. Today, the story of my love affair continues, but it continues in an unlikely way: my daughter and princess storybooks.
The librarians in the children's section of our library are great. Not only are they helpful and friendly, but they compile suggested book lists for kids of all ages. Lo and behold, we ran across a book list of princess stories, compiled by one of the children's librarians, and Abby could not wait to get started. The list was on the longer side (37 books total), but that kid kept reading until we'd read every princess book on the list!

Below are just a few of my favorites. Believe me: they're not your typical princesses!

Princess Peepers by Pam Calvert
An adorable story about a princess who is teased by the other princesses for wearing glasses, so she decides to take them off. Hilarity ensues, followed by a happy ending with a prince who is also rocking some spectacles.

Kitty Princess and the Newspaper Dress by Emma Carlow
Kitty Princess is the rudest princess anywhere, and gets a lesson in kindness from a spunky fairy godmouse.

Song for a Princess by Rachael Mortimer
A princess becomes very sad after her best friend and reading partner moves away. The birds of the kingdom try to cheer her up, but it is the smallest bird with the biggest love of words sings a song that brings a smile back to the princess's face.

Twenty-Six Princesses: An Alphabet Story by Dave Horowitz
A story of 26 little princesses, all trying to get to the palace to kiss the frog and turn him back into a prince. Each princess has her own rhyme, like "Princess Alice, first to the Palace" or "Princess Dot, a lady she's not." Abby loved the rhymes and was able to "read" the book to me after hearing it a few times.

Do Princesses Wear Hiking Boots? by Carmela LaVigna Coyle
A little girl goes through her day, asking her mommy if princesses wear hiking boots, ride bicycles, climb tress, or have bad days. And her mommy responds to each question in rhyme, letting her little princess know that there are lots of things that princesses can do!

Princess Pigtoria and the Pea by Pamela Duncan Edwards
A poor, but kind, princess named Pigtoria decides to answer a snooty prince's "want ad" for a real princess. This little piggy finds love in the form of a pizza pig instead and has a different happily ever after than you'd expect. The alliteration with the letter "P" made this a tricky book to read, but very fun.

Princess Hyacinth: The Surprising Tale of a Girl Who Floated by Florence Parry Heide
A little princess who unexpectedly floats, but who has a crush on a little boy who loves to fly kites. Any idea where this story is going? I loved the way the text was spread across the pages in unusual ways, and Abby liked that the story ended with popcorn, Aunt Katie's favorite snack.

Princess Kim and Too Much Truth by Maryann Cocca-Leffler
After being told at school that being honest is important, Kim takes it a bit too far and hurts the feelings of her friends and family. Then she learns how to be honest and kind at the same time. I loved the lesson of this book, being truthful and kind, and then we read the author's first Princess Kim book, Princess K.I.M. and the Lie That Grew, another good story with a great lesson.

Princesses Are Not Perfect by Kate Lum
When Princesses Allie, Mellie and Libby decide they want to do something different than what they've always done (baking, gardening, and woodworking), things turn into a bit of a mess. But they each soon realize that they are happiest when they're doing what they love.

So, while our "princess phase" includes our fair share of Belle, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella, I'm glad that Abby was excited to read stories about other types of princesses, too. Princesses who look different or don't act in the way we'd expect or decide to marry the pizza pig rather than the rude piggy prince. It's been a fun summer with Princess Abby!
