Being thankful...

Today, Abby had a rough day. (Or, perhaps I should say that Abby's mommy had a rough day.) My little munchkin is not a very consistent sleeper, and Carey and I have been struggling to figure out what works for our little girl. She doesn't like to sleep in her bassinet. (We think she may have a little acid reflux. Not bad enough to require treatment, but just enough to make her uncomfortable if she's laying flat. We even tried to prop up one side of the bassinet mattress, but to no avail. The bassinet has now become our "wake up Abby" method. Put her down in the bassinet, and she's awake (and screaming) within 5 minutes...) She will fall asleep in her car seat, but I don't really want her sleeping in it all the time. A friend suggested that we try a cradle swing, so Carey and I used the gift card we received from his co-workers to purchase the Fisher Price My Little Lamb Cradle and Swing. (Thanks, Rackets Bureau!!)
Yesterday was Abigail's first time in the cradle swing, and it went very well, as evidenced by this photo:

She's propped up just enough to make her comfortable, but she's not sitting up straight like she would in a traditional baby swing. (Plus, the cradle swing is so cute; it looks like a little lamb!) She slept like a champ yesterday; it was great!

Well, today has not been so smooth. Abby has been taking cat naps (around 30 minutes), and then waking up crying. I'll hold her and she'll eventually fall back asleep, but it's been a very exhausting day. (On the plus side, I can only imagine how strong my arms and shoulders are getting.) Abby wouldn't even calm down enough for us to take our walk around the neighborhood today. Normally she loves our walk. She'll stay awake for twenty minutes or so, and then she'll drift off to sleep. It's good for her to get some fresh air, and I appreciate the exercise and getting out of the house for an hour or so each day. Today, we barely made it around the block before I had to turn around and head back home.

While I was beginning to feel very frustrated, I looked down at Abigail (who had just fallen asleep in my arms). She looked so calm and peaceful, and I realized that I should be thankful for this time, even when she's being a little pain in my butt. :-P I'll be heading back to work in January, so I won't be able to spend all day with my little lima bean. Eventually, Abby will start crawling and walking, and then she probably won't want to be held in her mommy's arms. So, instead of being frustrated that Abby wouldn't go down for a nap today, I'm thankful to have my little girl and be able to hold her in my arms. She's not even four weeks old, so Carey and I have time to get her into a good sleep pattern. For now, I'll hold her when she cries and appreciate every minute that she'll stay in my arms.

Hey girl. Don't be so hard on yourself. When Sierra was 3 weeks old, my mother-in-law was here visiting and Sierra slept in her arms the ENTIRE time except for when she was nursing. And she wasn't going into her crib for the night until around midnight. Then she was waking up and eating about every 2-3 hours. The good news is...Sierra is a champ sleeper now. Abby is still VERY young...you can't expect too much from her at this point. Enjoy the moments, they surely don't last long enough.

Praying for you!
Blessings,
Karen ;)

Side note - have you been swaddling Abby? Sierra LOVED to be swaddled. She was swaddled probably until she was 6 or 7 weeks old. You could try that too. It might help her to feel more secure. That might be another reason why she loves the car seat so much, because she feels tight and secure in there. Just a thought...prayers to you both.

have you tried walking with her in a sling or bjorn?? avery was the sleepless wonder and there were lots of days when the only way to get her to stop fighting it was to strap her on and walk her. also, if you're having to walk her a lot around the house, it frees your hands up some, and they're snuggled right next to you. very nice for both of you. hopefully tomorrow is easier.
